Sacrament Meeting is a different experience for a young mother than it is for the general public. It is a series of small battles.
First, getting there on time.
Then, getting everyone inside the building without skinning any knees (aka-ripping open tights, pants, or dresses).
Thirdly, making sure everyone ends up on the same bench. Adrienne has a tendency to wander off to greener pastures.
All of this before the meeting has even started.
When the bread and water arrive (Annika: "Finally! I was sooooo hungry!)
We have more "issues"with the Sacrament.
Adrienne tries to sneak more than one piece of bread, Annika always has a comment about the bread's flavor, texture, and/or ingredients ("Eww, this one has seeds"-meaning whole wheat bread).
The most entertaining to watch though, is Kade. When he gets the water, you would think he was a great wine connoisseur. He smells it, then takes a sip, looks at it again, and then sips again. I finally have to whisper-yell "Drink it!" before he does.
Nathan gives a play-by-play about where all the deacons are going with the trays. He lets the other kids know when the deacons have lined up after the administration so that they can start begging me for the crayons...
Spiritual enlightenment. Love it.
For some reason, Adrienne had ants in her pants today and couldn't sit for longer than 10 seconds. It was ward conference and Burke was conducting with all of the stake leaders present. Adrienne wanted to run up to see him today. When I told her no, she would cry out.
At this point, every parent has The Decision to make: do I take him/her out?
I have to stop and think about the consequences of such an action. If I do take her out, what will happen when I am gone? Will the kids end up fighting each other? Will Cheerios end up all over our pew and the surrounding pews after an argument over whose Cheerios they are? Or will all of them come out after me? (and yes, all of the above have happened).
If I stay in the meeting, she will be disruptive and I cannot discipline her. (Again, church discipline learned from my older sister, I'll write about that someday--tee-hee.)
*Sigh* today I decided to stay in the meeting.
I finally got Adrienne to calm down and she sat on my lap. As I was beginning to tune in to the speaker (our stake president, a really great guy), Adrienne's eyes got really big.
He had just read this scripture from Ether 12:39
And then shall ye know that I have seen Jesus, and that he hath talked with me face to face, and that he told me in plain humility, even as a man telleth another in mine own language, concerning these things;
Adrienne said "Mom, he has seen Jesus!" Then she said, "I haven't seen Jesus. Have you?"
When I answered in the negative, she then said "Well, we better follow that man!"
